Join us on Aug. 1st for a book signing and intimate conversation between photographer Lauren Oliver and hairstylist/SALON founder Rubi Aguilar Jones on the power of hair in shaping personal identity and creating community.
Lauren Oliver’s newest work featuring a selection of self-portraits, photograms, and ephemera from her darkroom practice will be on view at SALON from August 1st - August 15th.
Her book Puntas Abiertas, published by Matarile Ediciones will be available for purchase throughout the duration of the exhibit. (while supplies last)
About Lauren: A New York City-based multidisciplinary artist who uses photography, filmmaking and performance to explore her multicultural identity. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from SUNY Purchase. Her photographs have been featured on i-D, Buzzfeed, F-stop Magazine, and The Luupe. Her first monograph, “Temple of the Self”, published by Monolith Editions in 2020, is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lauren works between the Gowanus Community Darkroom and Mono no Aware where she teaches and helps coordinate educational programming.
About Rubi: Rubi Aguilar Jones is a NY-based hairdresser represented by Julian Watson Agency. She runs Salon, a creative studio centered around the intersection of hair and culture.
About Matarile Editions: Matarile Ediciones is an artist-run photo book publisher that focuses on artists who are immigrants, their children, or part of a recent diaspora. Matarile Ediciones is run by Martha Naranjo Sandoval. Aline Enríquez is its head designer.
