CURA Hair Combs Launch

Combing in Care

CURA hair combs launch by gorgeous creature
with hair studies on film curated by
Karen Sofia Colon

April 10 | 6p - 8:30pm
SALON | 224 Roebling St

Join us for an event dedicated to the act of combing hair with the launch of CURA Combs by gorgeous creature and the screening of our first Hair Studies on Film curated by Karen Sofia Colon.

CURA combs are one-of-a kind glass combs designed for beauty and intentional hair care. Guests are invited to touch and interact with the pieces and comb your own or another’s hair.

On CURA combs:

“An object that celebrates the profound intimacy and connection that comes from the ritual act of combing hair. a reference to ancient combs often found in burial tombs across many cultures. Inspired by my love of the sea and it’s healing power. The teeth were designed to suggest the contours of fingers but also mineral formations. There are 9 teeth—a significant number in my life and one that represents the completion of a cycle and the beginning of another.

They are meant to be used lovingly: slowly, gently, and intentionally as an act of care for oneself, between lovers or loved ones. Their materiality in glass makes them both enduring and fragile. Holding them—using them—is a reminder to consider what we hold on to, what we let go of. How we hold ourselves. How we hold others.” - CURA Combs by gorgeous creature

Hair Studies on Film is a video projection of our growing educational archives which are expanding from books to moving images. Karen Sofia Colon has curated a reel dedicated to scenes of hair combing in films. In reference to our first library reading room, this grouping is intentionally curated as a taste of the future archive with an invitation to study and grow with our community’s contributions. As always, references are welcome, we will have a journal for your additional contributions.

Drinks will be provided. RSVP below.

Hair in Love ❤️💔❤️‍🩹❤️‍🔥📗 Vol. 2

We first made this journal in Feb. 2020. Clients were invited to write down love stories that intertwined with hair during their salon appointments. Culminating in a hand written, hand bound, record of love in our community.

Feels right to continue and expand with volume 2. As with the first, our cover will be made with our community members and the words inside as well. We’re opening up submissions to our broader Salon community outside of the walls of our Brooklyn space. We will print one copy only and it will be on the shelves of our (Salon)STUDY library as of Feb. 14th, 2025.

SHIMENAWA
by Miwako Urasugi

Thursday, Jan 30th | 6:30 - 9:30pm
SALON | 224 Roebling St

Tea provided by our friends and neighbors HACO

Miwako is exploring her roots, her home, and culture, through the medium of hair.

Her latest sculpture Shimenawa takes us back to her mothers home town, where a sacred rope used in Shinto marks the boundary between the divine and the earthly realms. For many, passing underneath shimenawa feels as if past burdens have been cleansed. Miwako’s shimenawa sculpture invites us to linger in the threshold and linger in the liminal space created, before intentionally entering the new.

Join us for organic Japanese tea provided by our friends and neighbors HACO, a multi-dimensional community space located at 31 Grand Street.

We look forward to seeing you.

Kristen is inspired by effortless hair and educates her clients with her personal ethos that less is always more. Kristens haircuts are low maintenance and cut to last. Kristens keen eye for detail allows her to create a custom cut for each client that reflects their lifestyle, personal style and elevates their natural texture. 6:30 pm

Gather with us on September 12th for a book signing and talk with Art Historian and author Elizabeth L. Block in conversation with hairstylist and founder of SALON Rubi Aguilar. Here are the untold stories of business owners, many of whom were Black or mixed-race. Trending styles of the seasons, from the pompadour to the Gibson Girl bouffant, worn by society women and actresses alike, are highlighted. Ritmo y Raíces de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa

Ritmo y Raíces de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa

Join us for a night of music, dance, and light bites to celebrate the newest addition to the library collection Ritmo y Raicés de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa.

We consider the (Salon)Study community library collection as a forever evolving and growing archive. Focused on inclusive storytelling that celebrates the intricate tapestry hair has in our lives and influences culture, science, art, fashion, music, and literature. Our categorization process is one where we focus on tiny but mighty groupings that will inspire the sections growth. Each includes books that we feel would converse while sitting next to each other on the library shelves. The categories lead to conversations in our reading room that naturally circulate back to sharing histories in oral, written, and photo forms which we hope inspires more research.

Along the curated books in this section dedicated to the aesthetics of Salsa within New York City, we have created a small journal of stories from our local community in Los Sures, Williamsburg and their connections to Salsa music. These stories were conversations between our neighboring hair salons, elders in the community and our library assistant, Yailenne Escobar, who has led the research of this library addition.

Pop in Saturday Oct. 21 between 6:30p - 9:30p and browse through books. Enjoy salsa music, chips and salsa, our signature agua de Jamaica, and more bites.
Yailenne will teach a
Salsa dance class at 7:30p

Branding Night

A conversation with session hairstylist and global brand consultant

Standing out in your category, establishing yourself in your industry and building a loyal community is important now more than ever.

Each person's beliefs, values, vision, mission, purpose, vibe, experience and tone of voice are all different, and these are what make you unique and what makes up your brand. These elements separate you from others in your industry and are the reason why people are your clients, your customers, your community and your network.

Defining your brand can move your business and career forward, attract your target audience and set you apart in a crowded market.

In this session Adlena will have an open conversation with Tish Dignam, founder of Diggs, whose mission is to demystify the brand marketing space by providing practical educational information, tools and tips on building your brand and marketing yourself in a way that FEELS GOOD. She’ll discuss how she’s currently building her business in real time and provide practical tools and advice that you can implement directly after the discussion.

This class is open to all creatives, hair and makeup artists, salon owners, and independent artists.
