Ritmo y Raíces de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa

Ritmo y Raíces de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa

Join us for a night of music, dance, and light bites to celebrate the newest addition to the library collection Ritmo y Raicés de Salsa: Narratives, Histories, and Aesthetics of Salsa.

We consider the (Salon)Study community library collection as a forever evolving and growing archive. Focused on inclusive storytelling that celebrates the intricate tapestry hair has in our lives and influences culture, science, art, fashion, music, and literature. Our categorization process is one where we focus on tiny but mighty groupings that will inspire the sections growth. Each includes books that we feel would converse while sitting next to each other on the library shelves. The categories lead to conversations in our reading room that naturally circulate back to sharing histories in oral, written, and photo forms which we hope inspires more research.

Along the curated books in this section dedicated to the aesthetics of Salsa within New York City, we have created a small journal of stories from our local community in Los Sures, Williamsburg and their connections to Salsa music. These stories were conversations between our neighboring hair salons, elders in the community and our library assistant, Yailenne Escobar, who has led the research of this library addition.

Pop in Saturday Oct. 21 between 6:30p - 9:30p and browse through books. Enjoy salsa music, chips and salsa, our signature agua de Jamaica, and more bites.
Yailenne will teach a
Salsa dance class at 7:30p

Salon
224 Roebling St.
BK 11221

About Yailenne: (pronounced JAI-LEEN; she/her), a Colombian American visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2019, she launched 'Para Las Mujeres, For the Women,' a dynamic platform featuring a podcast and creative healing workshops tailored for Black and Brown women, exploring culture, mental health, and queerness.

Yailenne is not only an artist but also an avid salsa dancer, lighting up dance floors across the city. With almost two years of experience at Salon, she seamlessly combines her 17 years of dance expertise with her passion for archival research, adding depth and creativity to her work.

About (Salon)Study: An active research center focused on the intersections of hair with culture, science, and art through a public library and studio space.

Branding Night

A conversation with session hairstylist and global brand consultant

Standing out in your category, establishing yourself in your industry and building a loyal community is important now more than ever.

Each person's beliefs, values, vision, mission, purpose, vibe, experience and tone of voice are all different, and these are what make you unique and what makes up your brand. These elements separate you from others in your industry and are the reason why people are your clients, your customers, your community and your network.

Defining your brand can move your business and career forward, attract your target audience and set you apart in a crowded market.

In this session Adlena will have an open conversation with Tish Dignam, founder of Diggs, whose mission is to demystify the brand marketing space by providing practical educational information, tools and tips on building your brand and marketing yourself in a way that FEELS GOOD. She’ll discuss how she’s currently building her business in real time and provide practical tools and advice that you can implement directly after the discussion.

This class is open to all creatives, hair and makeup artists, salon owners, and independent artists.

Fashion Workers Initiative Meet Up

The Fashion Workers Initiative is made up of the people who make the fashion industry run. We lift the lights, take the photos, apply the makeup, style the hair, steam the clothes, wear the clothes, build the sets, and pick up the coffee. Though we may engage in different roles, we stand together to create a better industry—we are self-employed but not alone.

This event will provide a forum for freelancers working in fashion and beauty to voice opinions, hopes, frustrations and ideas about the industry we all work in. It will also give us an opportunity to meet in person! Join us as we regroup, listen to freelancers in New York City, and decide what we need from our industry together.

Human Design Reading with Xenia Viray

Date: May 26, 10am - 3:30pm
Price: $99 - $188 (inquire about free scholarship option)

Through studying our Human Design chart, we can learn how to best align with our energetic design to create more flow, ease and joy in our life. Through cultivating self acceptance and clarity around our gifts and our true nature, we invite ourselves to fully shine as who we are and decondition from the programming that holds us back from being our true selves. I am a student of Jenna Zoe with a focus on self love + self trust.

Sessions typically begin with a channeled guided meditation and intention setting for you and the life you want to create. We then go into an intuitive reading of your human design chart which you are welcome to record. Upon signing up you will be asked for your birth details including the exact time of your birth.

This treatment is especially good for anyone who is: navigating a transition, refining their offering, or interested in learning about their energy.

More about (Salon)CARE Week:

Care Week was created as an experimental form of mutual community caregiving within our extended Salon community.

We're teaming up with holistic healers, pilates instructors, physical therapists, coaches, and others to offer resources and access to practices that can help support and sustain hairdressers body needs from the inside out and at every stage of their career.

PRICING:
Each practitioner is offering their services on a sliding scale or has set aside a few spots that will be free and prioritized for hairstylists whose own hair services are at a lower price point than the Care service cost. We aimed to price these services around the same price as an average NYC haircut or color, thus making the cost a direct service trade monetarily.

By booking a service at full price, you help fund a service for hairstylists who will benefit from our accessible pricing model. Our pro bono and sliding scale spots prioritize BIPOC hairstylists in our neighborhood of Los Sures. If this describes you, then you are highly encouraged to book an appointment and inquire about pricing accessibility. We thank you for practicing and experimenting with community caretaking with us at Salon for this first ever Care Week.

Through comprehensive services for our clients and their children, and through outreach, education and advocacy, we strive to create a world in which freedom from gender violence is a basic human right.

(Salon)CARE is rooted in nurturing the roles hairdressers have in the communities they live/work in through the personal care they intrinsically provide to anyone that sits in a their chair. These initiatives include fundraising, volunteering, and educating salon workers to continue to serve their communities as they historically always have.
