(Salon) STUDY

The first and only public library devoted to hair research.

STUDY

An active research center focused on the intersections of hair with culture, science, and art through a public library and studio space.

Open Call for Books

The Library

The Library aims to allow hairstylists (and anyone interested in beauty) to expand on their existing education by creating a space for inclusive storytelling that showcases the way hair weaves through our lives in culture, science, art, fashion, music, and literature.

We acknowledge that the beauty industry we know today is a reflection of a history that has erased and/or historically not promoted contributions by women, BIPOC, and the LGBTQ+ community. We want to put these stories at the forefront, alongside scientific and cultural research that educates (outside the lens of a major product brand).

Our library invites you to re-evaluate the way you look at hair. Analyze the stories you know, your opinions on beauty, your skills, and how you arrived there. What stories are missing from your beauty education/archive? Who was guiding the knowledge you were exposed to?

We invite you to visit, contribute to our research, and help curate the printed matter within so that together we can uplift stories that will lead to a more comprehensive and accessible beauty education.

The Studio

The Studio provides resources for artists exploring hair as a medium and produces in-house publications with contributions from the Salon community.

Our collection will never be complete, we aim to continuously grow with our community’s contributions.
